Osmosis vs. diffusion
although diffusion and osmosis are very similar,
they are not the same
Osmosis:
Osmosis is the movement of water from a high concentration to a low concentration.
There are three different movements of osmosis in a cell: Isotonic, Hypotonic, and Hypertonic
There are three different movements of osmosis in a cell: Isotonic, Hypotonic, and Hypertonic
Isotonic osmosis means that there's an even amount of solute both in the solution and the cell, water moves evenly in and out of the cell membrane.
|
Hypotonic osmosis means that there's more solute in the cell than in the solution, water flows into the cell, very little leaves. this may result in the cell bursting (LYSIS).
|
Hypertonic osmosis means that there's more solute in the solution than in the cell, water flows out of the cell, very little goes in. this may result in the cell shriveling.
|
diffusion:
Diffusion is a lot like osmosis, instead of water however, it is the movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration
